When it comes to the greatest tag-team in the history of pro wrestling there is really only one that comes off of the lips of most wrestling fans and it starts by saying…"Oooooohhhhhh, what a rush!" If you are still puzzled then lets clear things up by saying our number one team was managed by "Precious" Paul Ellering during most of it's lifespan. Still not sure, then read on for more, but in case you missed the other parts that made up this month's feature, go back to part one here, part two here and lastly part three here.
Number One: "Road Warriors/Legion of Doom" -Hawk and Animal
The duo that would eventually become the only team to hold the recognized World Tag-Team Championships in the AWA, NWA/WCW and WWF/E started out as friends in Chicago in there younger days. When they broke into the business the came together in the AWA in the early 1980's are part of a larger group entitled the "Legion of Doom" as it was a group of villains similar to cartoon version that battled the "Super Friends" (aka Justice League). After most of that group dissolve The Road Warriors, named after the movie, would be managed by Paul Ellering and dominate the tag-team ranks of the three top organizations for the better part of the next two decades. There finishing maneuver the "doomsday device" electric chair with top rope clothesline truly took out all the competition in front of them as many teams that faced early on them did not have the power to overcome the nearly 580 pounds combined weight of the duo. Going back to there tag-team championship accolades while they didn't hold titles in the AWA and NWA on more than one occasion each and only twice in the WWF, they also held the NWA International Tag-Team Championship in All-Japan Pro Wrestling, the NWA National Tag titles in Georgia, and several other regional championships. While Michael "Hawk " Hegstrand is no longer with us, Joe "Animal" Laurinaitis carries on the legacy of the Road Warriors still to this day. In 2011 the Legion of Doom along with Paul Ellering were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
We wanted to mention several teams that just missed making this top 10 countdown the Nasty Boys and the Steiner Brothers. The Nasty Boys of Brian Knobs and Jerry Sags are former AWA Southern Tag-Team Champions as well as holding the titles in WCW three times and the WWF once. The Steiner Brothers -Rick and Scott, held the IWGP Tag-Team Championship twice, the WWF titles twice and NWA/WCW U.S. tag titles on one occasion while also holding the NWA/WCW World tag titles seven times.
Well that concludes our top 10 countdown for the month of June, when we continue in July we will be looking more closely at the top 10 Women in the world of pro wrestling. That list will include many newer more recent "Divas" but also some of the pioneers of the sports' early days.Tags: AWA, IWGP, NWA, Road Warriors, WCW, World Tag-Team Championship, Wrestling, WWE Hall of Fame, WWF
