We now move the countdown of the top 10 matches at 'WrestleMania' on up to the number three spot. This was a match scheduled to go 60 minutes long, but went on even longer than that to determine a winner. It was an epic encounter between these two before what would become the "Montreal screwjob" at 'Survivor Series' in 1997.
As compared to the tie we had at number four, there is only one match for the number three spot but it went longer than expected at 'WrestleMania' XII. The main event featured the WWF Champion "Hitman" Bret Hart versus the "Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels in another rarity for the WWF a 60 minute Ironman match. The pre-match featured likely the most unique and possibly grandest entrance of all-time as Michaels zip lined down to the ring area. At ringside was Jose Lothario, who helped Shawn prepare for the grueling contest. These two competitors would fight a see-saw battle with incredible toughness and heart by both men. In the end Hart had Michaels locked in his sharpshooter finisher for the final 30 seconds of the match, but Michaels never submitted. The contest would have a winner and go into "sudden death" overtime where Michaels got the victory with two super-kicks to Hart, since he was too exhausted to cover him after the first one, but not the second. As Vince McMahon would exclaim post-match "the boyhood dream has come true." Another small changing of the guard moment had occurred in the WWF, but it was short lived to what would happen two years later as Stonecold Steve Austin would be passed the torch and run with it during the majority of the "Attitude Era."
Now in case you missed any of the previous matches in this countdown you may go back and read number five here and number four here, plus number six here, which includes links back to the rest, numbers 10 thru seven. Please feel free to comment/debate us on the merits of any/all of these matches.Tags: Attitude Era, Bret Hart, Ironman Match, Shawn Michaels, Stonecold Steve Austin, WrestleMania, Wrestling
