It is with great sadness that we must bring to you the news of the passing of Mae Young at age 90, who had been the oldest living WWE Hall of Famer. She was taken off of life support last Tuesday and survived a week without it, passing away this Tuesday.

Johnnie Mae Young was born March 12, 1923 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Her three brothers helped her to become a member of her high school boys wrestling squad when she was just 15 years old. She became a pioneer in the world of professional wrestling for women starting in the 1930's. The Fabulous Moolah (Mary Lillian Ellison) was actually a student of Mae's as she broke into the wrestling business around the same time as Young. In 1956 after then champion June Byers was stripped of the NWA World Women's Championship, both Young and Moolah participated in a Battle Royale to crown a new champion which became the start of the longest championship reign in history for The Fabulous Moolah at nearly 30 years. Mae Young became the first NWA Women's United States Champion in 1968 as the greatest championship glory in her career.

On March 29, 2008 Mae Young was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for all of her contributions to the world of professional wrestling. Four years earlier in 2004 she was inducted into the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum located in Amsterdam, New York, in part because she also wrestled/participated in wrestling in parts of nine different decades. Despite that she was the folly of many jokes towards the end of her career she was a truly unique personality and her spirit and toughness earned her a spot in the hearts of many fans around the world.

We here at WorldWrestling101 would like to extend our condolences to her family. Rest in peace Mae, you are among the greats again.
