Just six days before WWE delivers it's pay-per-view newly christened 'Battleground' their flagship program took a big ratings hit. The official rating for the September 30, 2013 episode of Monday Night Raw was a 2.68 which equates to an average of 3.583 million viewers. This is down from the previous week's episode which averaged 3.739 million viewers and even worse it is the lowest non-holiday edition of Raw since December, 2012.
There are several reasons to account for this drop that were outside of WWE's control. Just under 14 million viewers tuned in to see the NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the New Orleans Saints, strong new Monday night programming for the fall television schedule and an MLB playoff game. Stiff competition is expected in the fall for WWE but they didn't do much on their part to grab the interest of fans and viewers. We thank our friends at WrestleZone for much of the numbers we used based upon there article here.
It was a very weak go-home show for the WWE 'Battleground' pay-per-view that lacked any real compelling set up for the event except perhaps the Rhodes family situation and the continuing CM Punk vs Paul Heyman feud. With 'Battleground' already feeling like a show that most viewers may pass on WWE really needed to bring their A-game these last three weeks to convince people on the fence that the show will be worth the money. With the poor rating of Monday's RAW it is clear that they failed to do that and you can only wonder what the buy rates will be like for 'Battleground' and who will be blamed if it does poorly.
