For many years after Vince McMahon Jr. bought the then WWF from his father Vince Sr. Gorilla Monsoon was the main announcer and voice of the WWE. In 1993. and for the better part of the next decade and a half. Jim Ross, formerly with WCW, came to be the main announcer especially for Monday Night Raw and WWE pay-per-views. Now 20 year later, with major roles in the WWE front office as well, including talent scout, "good ol' JR" has retired.
As of yesterday, September 11th, a day we all will remember, members of the WWE Universe can also remember it for it being the last day Jim Ross worked for the company he has called home for 20 years. WWE.com reported the story here. Despite suffering from bell's palsy and being publicly "fired" at least once, Jim Ross has come to work for WWE for two decades, originally starting as lead announcer as Gorilla Monsoon stepped aside, and also being a talent scout that brought in many WWE Superstars and Divas over the years.
Jim Ross took over from Vince McMahon and became the voice of Monday Night Raw between 1996 and 2008 during the "Attitude Era" and the Monday Night Wars with WCW. Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler formed a tandem announce team that many will remember as the best in the history of wrestling. The WWE Universe got used to his famous phrases such as "slobber-knocker" and "there is nothing between them but air and opportunity" as adversaries would begin to square off with one in the ring and one on the stage. In 2007, prior to 'WrestleMania' "Stone Cold" Steve Austin inducted Jim Ross into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Jim Ross will always be remembered for calling some of the greatest matches in WWE history. While he has retired now from WWE to focus on his personal business ventures so many fans will miss his style on the mic, as it will likely never be duplicated. We here at WorldWrestling101 wish him the best in all of his future endeavors. (And we mean that in the best way possible)
