WWe's second biggest show of the year, Summerslam, is now officially in the books for 2013. This show lived up to the hype it generated while WWE had their superstars making the media rounds and the new week long Summerslam Axxess. The build on WWE programming was strong and the pay per view itself produced two match of the year candidates. Despite some mixed reactions over the finish to the main event the show has received overwhelmingly positive reviews. Here we are going to take a look at the first half of the show and go over some results and thoughts on the action.
Dean Ambrose (c) vs Rob Van Dam for the United States Championship
A very fun match that was more than most probably expected for a preshow match. It definitely had the energy and intensity to fire up the crowd before the pay per view officially kicked off. Ambrose has been very fun to watch in the ring especially since stepping into his singles role and RVD is the man who just won't age. RVD looked more energetic than he has in years and really gave his all to prove he can still impress you in between the ropes. The match ended with a DQ after Roman Reigns speared RVD just as it appeared he was about to win the US championship. Mark Henry and Big Show made the save to help RVD chase the Shield off. While not the most crowd pleasing finish it was a great choice to get things started.
Bray Wyatt w/Erick Rowan and Luke Harper vs Kane in a Ring of Fire match
A spectacle match like this is an odd choice to have on first once the actual pay per view begins but due to the setting up and tearing down required it makes sense why they made that decision. As for the match itself, it wasn't a great match as both men seemed out of sync with one another. They were surrounded by fire so it may have been nerves or they just didn't seem to click in their first major encounter. Still it was not a bad match and created some great visuals with the flames shooting higher on big moves. Harper and Rowan played their parts well looking for anyway to get in the ring and help their leader. Finally they stole a fireman's blanket from one of the firefighters at ringside and used it to cover the flames so they could get in the ring. The Wyatt family then proceeded to destroy Kane and allow Bray to pick up the win. After the match they slammed Kane's head between the steel ring steps and then carried him off. Regardless of the match not being great it was still an intriguing ending that left people wondering what is next.
These are two of the men that seem right on the cusp of breakout years and their match at Summerslam may have been the beginning of that. Besides running a little shorter than it seemed it would this match was a great display of what both men can do. It was absolutely an inspiring match from the newly shaven Cody Rhodes who was displaying some very crowd pleasing offense before picking up the win with Cross Rhodes. They both looked good and Sandow still carries that Money in the Bank briefcase so he could afford the loss.
This match had all the potential to be one hell of a match and these two did not let the fans down. They went out and had a match that under normal circumstances probably would have been match of the night. The action and the intensity from both Del Rio and Christian was there from beginning to end. There were plenty of near falls and on more than one occasion had the whole crowd gasping at the very close two counts. It looked for a most of the match that either man could win but Del Rio did a great job of working Christian's arm to set up for the cross arm breaker and in the end managed to make Captain Charisma tap out. Alberto Del Rio walks out of Summerslam still the World Heavyweight Champion and Christian looked very strong in defeat.
Natalya w/Cameron and Naomi vs Brie Bella w/Nikki Bella and Eva Marie
Most people tend to tune out for Divas matches or use those as restroom breaks but Natalya and Brie Bella proved why you shouldn't at Summerslam. They had one of the best Divas matches in recent history. They were sharp, intense and absolutely on point with everything they did in this match. The biggest problem with the match came from the fans in attendance. They decided to go into business for themselves and ignore the action in the ring. In the end it is their loss because while they were being disrespectful and trying to be the show they wound up missing a very good match. Natalya defeated Brie after locking her in the Sharpshooter and forcing her to tap out.
