J. Michael of CSN Washington is reporting that Wizards assistant Sam Cassell has been let out of his contract and will join the coaching staff of the Clippers. The move doesn't come as a surprise given the apparent mutual interest between the sides, as the Clippers have been attempting to hire Cassell away for weeks. The Wizards are not expected to receive anything in return.
Cassell has been a Wizards's assistant since 2009, where he's developed a positive reputation as a 'player's coach' and demonstrated his coaching chops during the Wizard's recent Summer League run. Cassell was reportedly instrumental in bringing Paul Pierce to the team in free agency. A former All-Star and three time NBA champion, Cassell should be able to learn a great deal under the tutelage of Doc Rivers, so the move to Los Angeles should be beneficial to his long-term head coaching prospects.
Michael also noted that the Wizards are already prepared to fill the vacancy, meaning an in-house replacement seems likely. Al Harrington seems a viable candidate. Harrington served as a Summer League assistant and is at the tail end of his career. If he decides he wants to dip his toes into coaching, he could join the Wizards's assistant staff permanently, a move that would also open up the 15th roster spot that is seemingly being saved for him. Regardless of who the Wizards get as a replacement, Cassell will definitely be missed.
