The middle linebacker position has been steady with London Fletcher and Perry Riley manning the top two spots last season. However, with top back-up Keenen Robinson out for the season after tearing his left pectoral muscle this offseason, the Washington Redskins are left a little short on the depth chart. That team worked out former Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills linebacker Nick Barnett yesterday, and the team remains hopeful they can work out a deal.
Barnett, 32, started all sixteen games for Buffalo last season, but was released back in February after failing a physical. In every season in which he's started at least fifteen games, he's gone over the 100 tackle mark and has 20 career sacks to his credit. Barnett has some experience playing both inside and at the strong linebacker position and would slot nicely behind the Redskins' starting four.
Washington has been hit with a rash of injuries during training camp that could spill over in to the preseason. The Redskins drafted outside linebacker Brandon Jenkins out of Florida State in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but he's recovering from a Lisfranc injury to his left foot and could slow his development. DeAngelo Hall went down early this week with sprained ligaments in his right ankle and could miss the rest of camp. Jarvis Jenkins, another Redskins draft pick, who was expected to start on opening day at one of the defensive end positions, was suspended four games after testing positive for Performance Enhancing Drugs.
The team is in desperate need of added depth for the beginning of the season. Mike Jones of the Washington Post reported on Twitter this morning that the team hadn't signed Barnett but the linebacker remained in Richmond overnight and could work out a deal today.
