The Washington Redskins announced the hiring of former Denver Broncos' Assistant Special Teams Coach Keith Burns yesterday. Burns replaces the out going ST coach Danny Smith who left the Redskins last month to take over Special Teams duties in Pittsburgh.
Burns is a former ST specialist who played under Coach Mike Shannahan and would get his coaching start under Shanny in 2007. Though overlooked by most fans special teams is a tide turner in the NFL. One just has to look at the Super Bowl to see that. Had Jacoby Jones not returned the opening second half kick for a Touchdown the Ravens may have lost to the 49ers.
One thing fans hope that Burns brings to the Redskins is an aggressive attack on punts and field goal attempts. Blocks on both can swing momentum in a game in the Redskins favor and is something that has been lacking under Smith.
Though loved by his players Smith came under scrutiny by many Burgundy and Gold fans lately with the lack of blocks by the punt and field goal teams as well as allowing too many of the Redskins' punts and field goals to be blocked. A fresh start for the special teams unit will be nice.
