Washington Redskins Wide Receiver Battles: Size Matters

The Washington Redskins have turned over most of the team since the arrivals of Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan. One of the major changes has taken place at wide receiver and it's beyond just bringing in new players; it's a new philosophy–which looks surprising like Green Bay's. In the last two off-season's, the Skins have signed or drafted three of their current top four receivers. All of them are at least six feet tall, 210 pounds.

Pierre Garcon, at 6'0", 212 pounds is the unquestioned number one receiver and starting opposite him, Leonard Hankerson measures in at  6"2", 211. The Redskins also feel comfortable with Josh Morgan playing any role–outside or slot–and he too is 6'1", 220.

There are also two other Redskins with outside shots to make the team, who fit this mold (Dezmon Briscoe and Kirkland Samuel). The only player who looks be a main contributor and doesn't fit the new mold in Washington is the beloved Santana Moss.

At just 5'10" and 189 pounds, Moss release on his quickness and route running to rack up yardage, but requires a more accurate pass. He can only adjust to a ball so much. That's been Brandon Banks biggest obstacle in making the team as well.

Over the last two years, Banks has made the team purely as a kick returner. Now that we've all seen the impact of the new kickoff rule, Shanahan has come out and said that Brandon will have to make the team as a receiver this season–and he's been given every opportunity so far. His main competition for the spot looks to be Aldrick Robinson, who has about four inches and thirty pounds on Banks.

Robinson's speed is no joke either. The Redskins bumped him up from the practice squad at the end of last season to keep other teams from signing him. They loved his speed, but with the shortened rookie offseason, they thought he needed a little more time to learn the system and work on his route running.

When the season starts, don't be surprised to see four physical, fast, six-foot plus receivers on the field for the Skins. After all, size does matter–in the NFL at least.
