The Washington Redskins’ Surprise Player of 2012: Aldrick Robinson

Sparked by a question asked on Twitter, @LL_HTTR has convinced me that Aldrick Robinson will be the surprise of the season. Robinson was called up from the practice squad by the Washington Redskins in the latter part of the 2011 season, after another team offered him a roster spot. Even though didn't get a chance to see the field last year, he does have the benefit of being indoctrinated in the system

@LL_HTTR is a Knowledgeable source, hosting a website (HTTR24-7) and a podcast, all dedicated to the Redskins. He's got connections to players and the organization. His words hold value to those who interact with him. Give him a follow: @LL_HTTR.

He talked about a 'role' the Shanahan's had planned out for Robinson this season. Mostly returning, but also making plays from the slot; eliminating the need for Brandon Banks. Also expect him to get opportunities on end-arounds, trick plays, bubble screens and deep balls. That role might not lead to a ton of statistical production (unless it's in the return game), but an exciting score can certainly change a game, beyond the six points awarded.

Terrence Austin is also batting for the kick returner/wide-out spot. He has more on-field experience than Robinson, but doesn't have that breakaway speed that you look for in a smaller, slot receiver.

The key for coach Shanahan is utilizing Aldrick Robinson's un-naturally, naturally gifted speed. The kid is lightning quick and has spent the last year developing in the Redskins system. This year he'll have a chance to produce.
