ESPN 980: Washington Redskins’ Brian Orkapo “Puts Blame on Himself”

Today, ESPN 980 had Brian Orakpo on their station and tweeted; "Brian Orakpo says he puts blame on himself for not finishing plays." That was clearly the case Sunday and I have a few pictures to help shed some light on the situation.

The first two are of Brian Orakpo's near sacks, that he couldn't make happen. The third is of DeMarcus Ware in a similar scenario.

Here it's second and 14. Tony Romo takes a deep drop and the football is still in his gut at this time. Somehow, Brian Orkapo needs to make a play here; strip, sack, at least pressure. Tony calmly steps up and delivers an 11 yard completion to Jason Witten.

Again the ball is still in Romo's gut. The Redskins have the lead and they need this third and six stop to help preserve it. Orakpo is in good position to make a play but doesn't. Tony eventually finds DeMarco Murray for the first down (drive ends in a touchdown).

Now here we get a look at DeMarcus Ware's only sack.

The Redskins have a first and 20 from their own 12 yard line and DeMarcus ware makes a big play for his team. You can see that he isn't any closer than Brian Orakpo was at times, but he finds a way to get Rex Grossman down. It's unexplainable, other than the fact that it happens for DeMarcus Ware, but not for Brian Orakpo … yet (or so we hope).

I will stick up for Brian Orakpo in the running game. He played his best run defense of the season against the Cowboys and did alright in coverage when he had too as well.

He's not playing at a Pro-Bowl level as of now. He's down in almost every category to the rookie Ryan Kerrigan and I'm tired of hearing it's because Brian Orakpo get's all the attention - that's simply not true. Lead by example please.
