With the seven-player deal involving Rudy Gay being official, the Raptors had to release one player as they were over the 15-man limit. With there being a logjam at the point guard position, the team announced today that they have waived point guard D.J. Augustin. Augustin struggled to get on the court due to that logjam at the position, but his lack of minutes can also be attributed to his lack of production.

In 10 games with the Raptors this season Augustin averaged only 2.1 points per game and 1.0 assists per game, while shooting 29.2% from the floor.

Augustin, 26, was signed as a free agent by the Raptors on July 22. His deal was a one-year contract that certainly didn`t work out for either side.

With Augustin gone, there are still four point guards on the team in Kyle Lowry, Greivis Vasquez, Julyan Stone and Dwight Buycks. Lowry is the current starter but his status with the team is now being discussed as he is a free agent at the end of the year. Vasquez will be Lowry`s backup, but has shown the ability to be a starter in this league. Stone was getting backup minutes before Vasquez`s arrival, so it only makes sense that he would be the third string point guard, leaving Buycks as the odd man out of that equation.

With there being four point guards on the roster, the Raptors could also look at starting both Lowry and Vasquez to improve ball movement and move DeMar DeRozan to the small forward position. This is an approach that some teams have taken and it seems to help the flow of the offense.

One thing is for sure, it will be interesting to see what happens with this team over the next few months as we are certain that Masai Ujiri is not done constructing this team to his liking.
