The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today announced the acquisition of guard Logan Mankins from the New England Patriots in exchange for tight end Tim Wright and an undisclosed draft pick. The trade comes one day after the Buccaneers visited with Richie Incognito.
“We have a responsibility to our team and of course our fans to put the best possible football team on the field that we can,” said Lovie Smith. “By adding Pro Bowler Logan Mankins to the mix, we feel like we’re definitely a better football team. New England got a good football player in Tim Wright also, so we feel like both teams benefited from it. It happened pretty quick. We’re just excited for him to become a Buccaneer.”
A three-time captain with New England, Mankins has earned six Pro Bowl berths (2007, 2009-13) and five All-Pro selections (2007, 2010-13) in his career. The California native was also selected to the New England Patriots All-2000s and 50th Anniversary teams. In 2012, he won the Ed Block Courage Award, given annually to players who are voted by their teammates as role models of inspiration, sportsmanship and courage.
Mankins, 6'4" and 308 pounds, originally entered the league as a first-round pick by New England in the 2005 NFL Draft. The Fresno State product has spent every season of his nine-year career with the Patriots, starting all 130 games he played in, as well as 17 postseason games, featuring two Super Bowl appearances.
While with New England, Mankins was part of one of the top offenses in the NFL, finishing in the top 10 in points scored every season he has been in the league, including three seasons where the team led the NFL (2007, 2010, 2012).
Wright played in all 16 games for the Buccaneers last season, starting eight, finishing the year with 54 receptions for 571 yards and five touchdowns. Wright joined Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports first reported the trade.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also announced that they placed cornerback Danny Gorrer on injured reserve, waived (injured) tackle Matt Patchan, waived cornerback Deveron Carr and tackle J.B. Shugarts and were awarded defensive back Marc Anthony and offensive lineman Jeremiah Warren off of waivers
