The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went into last Sunday's season opener against the Carolina Panthers down three cornerbacks. E.J. Biggers, who was Tampa Bay's nickel corner last season, is still nursing a foot injury. Anthony Gaitor injured his hamstring a week ago and still needs time to heal.
But the third corner that was inactive – Myron Lewis – was a healthy scratch.
That's not good news for the former 2010 third-round pick.
The Bucs decided to roll with Brandon McDonald, who was released last week and re-signed just days before the game, as their third corner, and were ready to use undrafted free agent Leonard Johnson as their dime back if need be.
So what does this mean? It means that Lewis is likely gone once Biggers and Gaitor regain their health.
Once again, we heard rumblings during training camp that Lewis was practicing well and seemed to be putting it all together. But when it came time to back it up in the games, Lewis struggled and was outshined by his fellow teammates.
The 6-foot-2, 203-pound Lewis has the measures to be a solid corner, but sadly he just has not lived up to his potential or draft status.
His departure is far from a given, but it doesn't look good for the once promising defensive back.
