BUCCANEERS 101

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got down to the 53-man roster limit on Friday night, but it was easy to see that roster they trimmed down to would not be the team that took the field next Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

On Saturday, head coach Greg Schiano that the roster would be a fluid situation through Tuesday and the Bucs have been busy already.

With only 52 players kept, the Bucs claimed guard Julian Vandervelde off waivers. Vandervelde was a fifth-round pick with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. He only played in one game as a rookie for the Eagles, but he started 37 games during his collegiate career at Iowa.

The Bucs also claimed defensive tackle Corvey Irvin, offensive lineman Cody Wallace, and running back D.J. Ware.

Tampa Bay had interest in Irvin while scouting him at the 2009 Senior Bowl. He ended up being drafted by the Panthers in the third round that year. He spent two seasons in Carolina before joining the Jaguars last season.

Wallace comes to Tampa Bay after spending time on the Texans, Jets, and Lions practice squads. He entered the league in 2008 as a fourth-round draft pick with the 49ers. Wallace is versatile and can play the guard and center position.

Ware comes to the Bucs from the Giants, where he been a backup since 2007. The 225-pound Ware brings a veteran presence to a running back group that includes two rookies (Doug Martin and Michael Smith) and LeGarrette Blount, who is just going into his third season.

During his time in New York, Ware has won two Super Bowl rings and has carried the ball 81 times for 324 yards with one touchdown. He also has 37 receptions for 252 yards.

To make room for the newcomers, the Bucs released cornerback Brandon McDonald, defensive tackle Wallace Gilberry, and offensive lineman Brandon Sowell.
