Football pundits are generally less accurate than weather forecasters in their predictions. This has especially been true in the NFC West. Ever since Joe Montana and Steve Young departed San Francisco, the so-called "experts" covering this division have been a day late and a dollar short in predicting divisional dominance.
Nobody saw "The Greatest Show on Turf" coming. Neither did anyone see the sudden emergence of the 49ers under Jim Harbaugh or Russell Wilson's meteoric rise to "elite" status as a quarterback. It looks like they have 2013 pegged pretty well though.
The preseason prognosticators almost unanimously penciled in the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks as the leaders in a two-horse race. The Rams and Arizona Cardinals were universally slotted as also rans. Seven weeks into the season, it's playing out exactly the way the pundits predicted.
The Seahawks cemented their divisional stranglehold last Thursday by dismantling the Arizona Cardinals on their home field. That puts Seattle at 6-1. A win Monday night in St. Louis will give them a sweep of their first go-round through the division. The scary thing is Seattle is doing this with a MASH unit of an offensive line. When they get back Russell Okung and actually allow Russell Wilson to quarterback without running for his life, the Hawks look downright scary good.
Arizona will try to get back to the .500 mark at home against Atlanta on Sunday.
Meanwhile the San Francisco 49ers keep on winning in Harbaugh style. It's never pretty, but it usually results in a "W." The Niners went to Nashville to face a Titans team hoping to spring the upset with their quarterback Jake Locker back in action. San Francisco smacked Tennessee in the mouth from the opening kickoff and never let up.
The Niners used the legs of Frank Gore and finally unleashed Colin Kaepernick into the running game to control the clock and churn out a 31-17 win. San Francisco opened up a 17-0 halftime lead and then constricted the Titans into submission in the second half. The win keeps San Francisco a game behind the front-running Seahawks.
The Niners go to Jacksonville this weekend. If you haven't yet picked them in your Survivor Pool, this weekend is a good bet.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. This season, the blind scribes seem to have accurately predicted the unpredictable NFC West.
