You think St. Louis is worked up over the Rams 1-2 start? The Bay Area is apoplectic over the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers stumble out of the gate. What was predicted to be a two-horse race between the Niners and Seahawks for NFC West (and NFC) dominance, is turning out to be all Seattle as we approach the quarter pole.
The Niners dropped their second straight game Sunday, 27-7 at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts. It wasn't that close. A beaten up Colts' offensive line came in an completely dominated the vaunted Niners defensive front. The trio of Ahmad Bradshaw, Trent Richardson and Donald Brown gashed the Niners for 179 yards on the ground. When the Colts weren't churning out yards on the ground, Jim Harbaugh's former Stanford protege, Andrew Luck, was picking them apart with his arm.
The Colts defense showed the blue print for stopping the Niners offense, too. All day long, they kept Colin Kaepernick in the pocket. That forced him to make hurried throws to his less than stellar group of receivers and exposed him to more hits than he was comfortable taking.
In short, the Colts bloodied the bullies' noses. The question now is whether the Rams can replicate this smash mouth performance and whether the Niners can get back up from their bruising on a short week.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks predictably trounced the Jacksonville Jaguars 45-17 in Seattle. It was never a game. By the midpoint of the third quarter, QB Russell Wilson had already tossed four touchdown passes and donned a baseball cap to watch the rest of the massacre.
Seattle will hit the road this weekend to take on the Houston Texans in what should be a good test to see if they can be as dominant on the road as they have been at home.
The Arizona Cardinals fell to 1-2 thanks to a 31-7 thumping at the hands of the New Orleans Saints. The Cardinals had no answer for Drew Brees, who riddled Arizona for 342 yards and three touchdowns through the air. Brees also showed off his wheels, rushing for 21 yards and a touchdown.
The Cardinals will travel to 0-3 Tampa Bay hoping to right their ship before a challenging October part of their schedule comes calling.
