Early impact for the Gamecocks

As much-ballyhooed as CB Jamyest Williams’ signing with South Carolina has been, it was another 2017 signee who made SEC Country’s short list of SEC newcomers set to make an impact in 2017: JUCO DE Javon Kinlaw.

“Will Muschamp must replace a lot of production from his defense and add girth for 2017. Kinlaw fits the bill,” wrote Oliver Connolly. “He’s a massive prospect who can sit in the middle of defense, play 2-gap, do the unseen work and create 1-on-1 opportunities for everyone else. The Gamecocks will need Kinlaw to be a presence from his first snap.”

With Muschamp issuing an APB for any and all pass rushers following the Gamecocks’ Birmingham Bowl loss, it’s the colossal Kinlaw that seems best equipped to answer the call.

More praise for Gamecocks’ QBs

Earlier this month, ESPN rated the Gamecocks’ quarterbacks as No. 7 in the conference, so what did SEC Country have to say about the position group?

Turns out it was much of the same, with QB Jake Bentley and company coming in at No. 6 in the rankings â?¦

“Of all the young quarterbacks, he’s the most advanced from the neck up,” Connolly writes of Bentley.

“He can move and manipulate the defense with his eyes to distort coverage and create the matchups he wants. And he has the figure-it-out gene, quickly coming off deep shots to hit his checkdown or playing off-script and finding a way to complete throws.”
