Former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ Antonio Pierce appeared on ESPN today and agreed that the spotlight being on Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has likely taken some pressure off of young quarterback Russell Wilson. The news broke Friday that Sherman would be fined almost $8,000 for "unnecessarily taunting his opponent" after his comments post-NFC Championship game.
"It was a great distraction," Pierce said on air of the Sherman headlines. Pierce also called the events of this week a good "opportunity" for Wilson to take a step back from the spotlight and focus on the game.
Wilson, who was drafted in 2012 by the Seahawks after great success at Big Ten school University of Wisconsin, has struggled with his game of late. Wilson, 25, has played in 16 games in 2013 – with 407 attempts, nine interceptions and an average completion percentage of 63.1, the beginning of the season was much stronger for the young QB. In the past six games, he hasn't thrown for more than one touchdown per game, where in the beginning and middle of 2013's regular season, he was throwing for as many as four.
While his QB rating has dropped significantly in the post-season, the team was still able to pull through for their first Super Bowl berth since 2006, so it can't be all bad. Landing somewhere in the middle of the top 10 youngest QB's to ever start a Super Bowl, Wilson will also lead the second-ever youngest team to make it to the Super Bowl, so those stats already prove his accomplishments .
With all the headlines swirling, Seahawks fans can only hope that the team will be well-prepared for the big game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, February 2.
