Brace yourselves; this is yet another article about Tomas Hertl. The NHL announced that San Jose Sharks rookie has been named the league's First Star of the Week. Colorado goalies J.S. Giguere and Semyon Varlamov shared second star honors, and Sidney Crosby was named third star.
It's hard to disagree with the honor; Hertl scored five goals in the Sharks' three games last week and is tied for second place in league scoring with three other players. Four of those goals came in the most talked about game last week against the New York Rangers, where he topped off the night with the now infamous between-the-legs shot in the third period. If it wasn't for an injury in the second period against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night, he may have had another hat trick, having scored within a minute of puck drop.
During the Ottawa game, 19-year old was injured in a legal hit to his shoulder/head by Clarke MacArthur. He was obviously shaken up, pitching a yard sale, leaving his gloves and stick on the ice as he immediately skated to the Sharks bench. Hertl took Sunday practice off to heal from his injury, but coach Scott McLellan quickly commented that it was strictly for maintenance and there should be no reason for him not to play Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.
Hertl's presence on the ice has sparked a real excitement amongst Sharks fans. When he steps on the ice, he has both superb skill and a showmanship that hasn't been seen in awhile. Tune in to NBC Sports Network at 5:00 pm PST on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to see if the Sharks continue their undefeated streak and if Hertl can net other few goals.
