Three games into the 2013-2014 NHL
season, the fat lady has sung. Can we just give Tomas Hertl
the Calder Trophy already? Oh, and might as well give him Goal of the Year. (Are you listening, ESPN experts
The San Jose
rookie has more goals (6) than games played in his short NHL
career. He also racked up the first hat trick, plus one, of his career in a 9-2 bloodbath over the New York Rangers
Breaking Records Left and Right
The baby-faced 19-year-old became the first player to score five goals in his first three NHL
games since 1979. Then he became the youngest Shark since 1988, and 4th youngest in all of NHL
, to score four goals in a single game. Hertl wasn't finished there. He obliterated Owen Nolan's 1995 record (32 min, 35 sec), becoming the fastest individual to score four goals in a game at 22 min, 46 seconds. He would have become the all time franchise record by any Sharks player if he had scored again in the final six minutes of play. All this from a kid who was born the same year Michael Jordan retired from basketball. Wow.
Spoils of Riches
Hertl wasn't the only Shark finding the back of the net. Marc-Edouard Vlasic
knotted the game and Dan Boyle
gave San Jose
the go-ahead goal in the first period. In the second period, fellow newbie Matt Nieto
logged his first NHL
goal and Logan Couture
added to the list with his second on the season. Of the four goals scored in the second period, three of them came within an 83-second stretch. The pure dominance was enough to chase NY goalie, and former Vezina winner, Henrik Lundqvist off the ice halfway through the period. In case it wasn't clear that the Sharks had just devoured the Rangers, defenseman Justin Braun put the ninth and final nail in the coffin with four minutes left in the third period.
You Get a Point, and You Get a Point!
The New York Rangers
were handing San Jose Sharks
points so freely, you'd think they were on the Oprah show. Twelve (yes, twelve) different Sharks had points before the second period was over.
The Rangers' floundering second period wasn't the sole reason the Sharks were successful. San Jose
was simply outhustling and outsmarting the storied team from Gotham. They played, passed faster out of the defensive zone, creating numerous turnovers that turned into scoring opportunities.
Speed, Skill, Confidence
Those are the three words that San Jose Sharks
play-by-play commentator Drew Remenda used to describe Tomas Hertl
. We couldn't have said it better ourselves. The Kid dominates with his blazing speed and spectacular puck handling skills. He's amazingly poised on the ice. Did you see that fourth goal that he chipped through his legs as he sped past Rangers' backup keeper Martin Biron? Simply stunning:
