Sharks forward Raffi Torres will be out of action for at least six weeks with an ACL injury. Torres injured his right knee during a freak collision with Emerson Etem on Friday night. The Ducks' right-wing was attempting to stay onside by extending his leg over the blueline when Torres sideswiped him.
Sharks trainers and coaching staff have not yet determined whether Torres will have to undergo surgery to repair any damage. They will reconvene after the swelling subsides and further tests later this week to make a decision. Sharks GM Doug Wilson refused to stoke the fire, telling the San Jose Mercury News,
“It’s the one thing we don’t do is jump to conclusions,” Wilson said. “Let it calm down, we’ll get it diagnosed properly and then make decision from there.”
Should Torres have to undergo surgery, he will likely be out of commission for a devastating three to four months.
Make no mistakes, Sharks fans, this is a significant loss to the Sharks' lineup. Raffi's physicality and speed are aspects that the Sharks were in short supply of last season, and had hoped to build upon this year. Torres, 31, was acquired by San Jose at last year’s trade deadline and blasted through 11 regular season games, scoring six points while racking up 38 hits. His absence for the remainder of last postseason due to a suspension for a controversial illegal hit on Jarret Stoll was felt like, pardon the pun, a blow to the head. If he wasn't a key piece of the Sharks' puzzle, Doug Wilson wouldn't have been so eager to sign him in the offseason.
Who Will Fill Raffi's Skates?
Though bad news for Torres, the injury may open the door for some rooks to break into the lineup. Tomas Hertl is pleading his case to make the team with a fantastic preseason. Matt Nieto and Freddie Hamliton have also showed well in the last two games. Or will more veteran players such as Bracken Kearns or Anthony Stewart be first in line to vie for a spot? At this point, there are still three preseason games left, so the job is still available. Who do you think will make the cut?
