Last night's preseason opener against the Vancouver Canucks was all Sharks shooting. San Jose outshot Vancouver 42-16 on the night, with the deciding goal by Tommy Wingels with only 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd period. Joe Pavelski's shot was deflected off Wingels during the power play with the Canucks' Alex Burrows in the box for roughing.
In a game without regulars Logan Couture, Patrick Marleau, Dan Boyle and netminder Antti Niemi, the Sharks were in their newly aggressive form, dominating for the majority of three periods. The only Sharks superstar on the ice was center Joe Pavelski, who showed the thin Vancouver team who's boss within 10 minutes, scoring first on the night for the Sharks.
San Jose returned to the ice in the 2nd period a little sluggish, but soon gained momentum and the team began bombarding Vancouver with shot after shot, until Scott Hannan assisted John McCarthy to give the Sharks a 2-1 lead. The team had six powerplay opportunities, but only converted on the game winner.
The biggest event of the night was a scrum that resulted in penalties for the Sharks' Adam Burish and James Sheppard, and 2 extra minutes tacked on to Canucks Dale Weise and Tom Sestito,. Without their top unit on the ice, the Sharks failed to convert on the two minute 5-on-3 opportunity.
Takeaways from the game
Tomas Hertl is virtually a lock to make opening day roster. He logged 4 shots on goal in 18 minutes of ice time and looked strong on the Pavelski/Wingels line.
Goalkeeper prospect Alex Stalock didn't have his best game, stopping 14 out of 16 shots for a .875 save percentage. It was only the first game of the preseason, however, so look for him to step it up next time he's on the ice.
The Sharks will take on the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at the SAP Center at 7:30pm. The game will not be broadcast on TV, so you'll have to head over to SAP for some preseason action! Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com.
