Friday morning the San Jose Sharks took the ice for their first intersquad scrimmage. Recent forward convert, Brent Burns, came out of the gates flying, scoring one of five goals for Team Teal, who beat Team White 5-1. Newcomer Tyler Kennedy had the assist after he showed off his skating skills past Nick Petrecki and glided behind the net, where he tucked the puck in to Burns who easily converted the goal.
Burns also clashed with Worcester Sharks defenseman Sena Acolatse throughout the game, with Acolatse receiving a whack to the face, though Burns claimed it was with his own stick.
Head Coach Toldd McLellan was pleased with Burnzie's typical bruising style of play:
“If you witnessed it or watched it it’s not different that what he played last year…Powered his way to a lot of the areas, was very aggressive, and he’ll have some success if he continues that.”
Pavelski's First Impression of Newcomer Hertl
Over the past couple months, Sharks prospect Tomas Hertl has been the talk of the town. The 6'2", 210 lb. Czech is immensely talented on both offense and defense. His quickness and puck-handling skills seem to be out of line with his large size, and surprise the defenseman he flies past. Today's practice scrimmage was no different. Sharks winger Joe Pavelski seemed equally impressed by the 19-year old,
“He has the skill level. He’s a first-rounder. He can skate, handle the puck and shoot it. He looks like he’s having fun out there. We communicated a little bit. He doesn’t speak a whole lot.” (Hertl is still learning English, though is picking up the language fairly quickly) “You can see him out there just watching, watching the drills. That’s the best way to learn, with your eyes. He’s done that so far. He’s fit into the drills. If you explain something to him, he catches on and is right there. He’s not falling behind. The only time anything happens like that is just because he didn’t understand right away. He seems like a smart player.”
When asked about his first practice with the Sharks, Hertl simply stated, "First practice was very, very hard and fast, and I am very tired.”
