This will be a critical offseason for the San Francisco Giants to make some solid moves and add pieces to a team that will be highly motivated to return as World Series champions in 2014.
The Giants have already addressed some of their top priorities by re-signing Hunter Pence to a five-year deal worth $90 million and Tim Lincecum to a two-year deal worth $35 million. Next on the list is re-signing left-handed reliever Javier Lopez, who was so instrumental on the Giants two championship teams since coming to the club in July 2010. Lopez had a great 2013 season, going 4-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 69 games. He allowed 30 hits, 10 runs, eight earned runs, one home run and 37 strikeouts in 39.1 innings. Lopez held the opposition to a .208 batting average, while holding left-handed batters to a .156 average and opponents batted .164 against him with runners in scoring position.
In his four years with the team, Lopez is 14-4 with a 2.26 ERA in 236 games, while allowing just two home runs and 121 strikeouts. The Giants have to re-sign Lopez and losing him would be a huge blow to their bullpen.
The Giants will be looking for another starting pitcher or two, depending on if they pick up Ryan Vogelsong's option for 2014. If they do, they will need to fill another spot with the departure of Barry Zito. Some potential free agent starters out there are Bronson Arroyo, Matt Garza, Scott Feldman and A.J. Burnett.
With center field and right field locked in, the Giants need to get more production in left field by adding someone with above average offense and defense. Notable left fielders on the market are Nate McLouth, Laynce Nix and David Murphy.
The Giants don't have to make the sexy moves this offseason, but adding the right players who fit the Giants way will help them contend once again next year.
