San Francisco Giants right fielder Hunter Pence capped off an incredible weekend Sunday afternoon with a walk-off single in the ninth to secure a 7-6 Giants win over the San Diego Padres on the final day of the regular season.
Friday, Pence was named the winner of the 2013 Willie Mac Award, Saturday, he agreed to a five-year deal worth $90 million and Sunday, he recorded his ninth career walk-off hit and first walk-off with the Giants.
The game was tied at 2-2 in the top of the fifth, when second baseman Jedd Gyorko's smacked a grand slam to give the Padres a 6-2 lead. The Giants added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a Brandon Belt RBI double and a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Pence to cut the Padres lead to 6-5.
Francisco Peguero led off the bottom of the ninth with his first career home run to tie the game at 6 off Padres closer Huston Street. The next three batters reached base to load the bases for Pence, who drilled an RBI single to give the Giants a 7-6 win and their 12th walk-off win. The Giants finish the season tied for third place with a 76-86 record and 11-8 mark versus the Padres. The Giants were 44-32 against the National League West and 42-40 at home.
The Giants won 10 of their last 15 games to end the season on a surge, finishing the month of September 16-11. The Giants connected with 11 hits on the day led by Tony Abreu, Belt, Pence and Pablo Sandoval, who each had two on the day. Sergio Romo notched the win to finish the year with a 5-8 record.
Giants pitcher Barry Zito made one last appearance in the top of the eighth, throwing four pitches to strikeout former teammate Mark Kotsay, who is retiring after the season, to end the inning. The sellout crowd of AT&T Park gave Zito a standing ovation for his seven-year run with the team and Giants fans will never forget his performance in Game 5 of the 2012 National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals as the Giants staved off elimination and rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
