The San Francisco Giants are not going to the playoffs this season, but embarrassing their arch rivals Saturday night is the next best thing. The orange and black humiliated the Los Angeles Dodgers 19-3.
The 19 runs are the most runs scored by a team at Dodger Stadium and the Giants produced a season-high 22 hits on the night. The Giants record for runs in a game occurred on June 8, 1990 in a 23-8 win in Atlanta over the Braves. In that game, they set a single-game record for 27 hits in a game. The last time the Giants had 22 hits in a game was on May 13, 2007 in a 15-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.
The Giants previous record for runs scored at Dodger Stadium was back on July 29, 1987, when they defeated the Dodgers 16-2 on that night behind a complete game by Mike Krukow.
The Giants offense Saturday was led by the red hot Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt. Pence recorded a career best seven RBI's and his fourth career grand slam in the top of the fifth. It was the Giants first grand slam of the season. Pence was the seventh player with seven RBI's at Dodger Stadium and first Giant to accomplish this feat since Barry Bonds did so on October 1, 1993. Belt produced a career-high six RBI's in the win.
Giants starting pitcher Tim Lincecum earned the win (10-13) and contributed with two hits on the night. It was his third career two hit game and has won 10 games for the sixth straight season. The Giants have won his last five starts and Lincecum is two strikeouts away from reaching 1,500 in his career.
Lastly, Giants catcher Johnny Monell recorded his first Major League hit in the top of the eighth with a single.
