San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit was one strike away from throwing a perfect game Friday night in a 3-0 Giants shutout win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
After retiring the first 26 batters, pinch-hitter Eric Chavez came to the plate and smacked a single with two strikes to right field that ended a shot at the second Giants perfect game in franchise history. Hunter Pence made a diving attempt to keep perfection alive, but came up short in his bid at a sliding catch.
Petit recorded his first career complete game as he threw 95 pitches on the night. The righty is 3-0 on the season with a 2.05 ERA in four games and three starts, allowing 20 hits, six runs, one home run, four walks and 30 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. He is holding the opposition to a .211 batting average.
The 28-year-old was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 2001 and made his Major League debut on May 14, 2006 with the Florida Marlins. He spent three seasons (2007-2009) with the Diamondbacks and throwing his first complete game against his former team had to be extra special.
The Venezuelan has a career 13-20 record with a 5.19 ERA in 76 games and 40 games started. He has tossed three straight quality starts and the Giants are 3-0 in his outings. Petit is making a name for himself down the stretch and looking to be in the Giants plans for next season.
