The San Francisco Giants began their road tip with a 6-1 loss to the Colorado Rockies Monday night behind another rough outing by Barry Zito.
Zito allowed a two-run homer to first baseman Todd Helton in the bottom of the second to give the Rockies an early 2-0 lead. Center fielder Charlie Blackmon led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to extend the lead to 3-0. The Rockies added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by starter Juan Nicasio and a Blackmon force out giving them a 5-0 lead.
Nicasio kept the Giants in check the first five innings before they threatened in the top of the sixth. Brandon Belt was hit by a pitch and Buster Posey singled. Nicasio shut the Giants down by getting two fly outs and a strikeout to neglect the rally. The Rockies added a run in the bottom of the seventh and the Giants managed to squeeze a run out in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by pinch-hitter Joaquin Arias. The Rockies took the first game of this three-game series 6-1. The Giants are 7-7 versus them on the season and 24-38 on the road this year.
Zito struggled in the loss (4-10) going four innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, one walk, one strikeout and threw 74 pitches. The Giants lefty remains winless on the road this season and has not won a game since May 30.
The Rockies pounded out 13 hits on the night, compared to the Giants seven. The Giants are 29-22 against the National West this year.
The 58-73 Giants look to win Tuesday night sending Yusmeiro Petit (0-0) to the hill against Chad Bettis (0-2). First pitch is scheduled for 5:40 pm.
