After losing the first two games of this four-game series, the San Francisco Giants rebounded by capturing the last two games, shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 Sunday afternoon to split the series.
Ryan Vogelsong needed just 10 pitches in the top of the first to retire the Pirates in order. Pirates starter A.J. Burnett made quick work of the Giants in the bottom of the first.
Gregor Blanco drew a walk in the bottom of the third with two outs and moved to third on a Brandon Crawford single. Buster Posey came through with an RBI single to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.
Both pitchers settled into a groove and kept the score at 1-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Posey and Hunter Pence both singled in the inning as Pablo Sandoval came to the plate. Sandoval clobbered a two-run triple to extend the Giants lead to 3-0. It was his first triple of the season and first since August 2012. One batter later, Joaquin Arias doubled home Sandoval to increase the Giants cushion to 4-0.
Sandy Rosario pitched a clean top of the ninth to give the Giants a 4-0 win and split in the series. The Giants recorded their 11th shutout on the season and seventh at home. They finish the homestand with a 3-4 record.
Vogelsong pitched his best game of the year in the win (3-4) going a season-high eight innings, allowing two hits, zero runs, one walk, five strikeouts and threw 98 pitches.
Posey and Sandoval each led the Giants with two hits on the day.
The 58-72 Giants begin a nine-game road trip Monday night in Colorado against the Rockies. Barry Zito (4-9) gets the ball in the opener opposing Juan Nicasio (7-6). First pitch is scheduled for 5:40 pm.
