The San Francisco Giants host the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at AT&T Park in the opener of a four-game series.
The 74-52 Pirates sit in first place in the tough National League Central and look to make the postseason for the first time since 1992, which was the last time the franchise had a winning record. The 56-70 Giants are in last place in the National League West.
The Pirates won two of three from the Giants in Pittsburgh back in June and are 12-15 versus the Giants the past five years. The Pirates are 5-10 at AT&T Park since 2008. The Pirates are led by center fielder Andrew McCutchen, who is batting .319 with 148 hits, 17 home runs and 72 RBI's in 123 games.
Tonight's matchup has Matt Cain (8-8) taking on Jeff Locke (9-4) at 7:15 pm. Cain is 3-2 lifetime with a 2.79 ERA in 67.2 innings against the Pirates.
Friday will see Madison Bumgarner (11-7) facing Charlie Morton (4-3) at 7:15 pm. Bumgarner is 1-1 against the Pirates with a 0.69 ERA and 17 strikeouts.
Saturday Tim Lincecum (6-13) takes the mound opposing Francisco Liriano (14-5) at 6:05 pm. Lincecum is 1-3 in his career with a 4.38 ERA in 37 innings facing the Pirates.
Sunday's series finale pits Ryan Vogelsong (2-4) battling A.J. Burnett (6-8) at 1:05 pm. Vogelsong is 1-3 lifetime with a 4.50 ERA in 24 innings versus the Pirates.
The Giants are 9-21 against teams from the NL Central this season and look to play much better during this series.
