Giants starter Tim Lincecum ran into some trouble in the top of the second as the first two Red Sox batters reached base. With runners on second and third, third baseman Will Middlebrooks drove in the first run with an RBI sacrifice fly and the Red Sox scored another run on a balk by Lincecum. Right fielder Shane Victorino scored the third run of the inning with an RBI single.
The Giants did not record their first hit of the game until Andres Torres led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Left fielder Daniel Nava singled with two outs in the top of the fifth and scored on an RBI double by shortstop Stephen Drew to extend the lead to 4-0. The Red Sox added another run in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch by Giants reliever Guillermo Moscoso.
The story of this game was the performance by Lester, who blanketed the Giants for 8.1 innings. The Red Sox scored two more runs in the top of the ninth and won going away 7-0.
