A few days ago, it was rumored that a few unidentified teams were preparing to contact the San Francisco 49ers about the availability of starting right guard Alex Boone. According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, Tampa Bay is looking to upgrade its offensive line from outside the organization and that a real interest in Boone is growing.
During the Bucs Friday night pre-season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, new starting quarterback Josh McCown spent the majority of his four series on the run. The offensive line constantly had their backs against the wall and showed little resistance against the Jags rush. As a result, new Head Coach Lovie Smith Roy Cummings of The Tampa Tribune over the weekend that sixth year pro Jamon Meredith has been removed as the starting right guard.
"Jamon didn't play as well as he needed to, so we're going to let him concentrate a little bit more at the tackle position and give that next group of guards an opportunity."
For the time being, first year player Jace Daniels will fill the position. Daniels was a undrafted free-agent out of Northern Michigan in 2013, thus showing the lack of depth the Bucs posses on the O-line.
The cost for Boone could be hard to measure as the Niners may be backed in a corner with the 27-year old guard standing strong with his holdout. However, the Bucs do not posses nearly as much talent as SF and could value Boone much more. Something in the neighborhood of a third-round pick could get the ball moving, yet the Bucs would also have to be willing to shell out more money to Boone in order to ensure he comes to camp.
The clock is ticking as week one of the NFL season is less than a month away.
