San Diego Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is seamlessly making the transition to starting in the NFL. The third year man out of the University of Southern California has taken that role and provided the Chargers with a very solid option in the secondary.
“The transition has been good,” Wright said. “I’m getting used to the role and responsibility of matching up with the best wide receivers and giving us a chance to win.”
Last week against the division-leading Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead, San Diego took a massive step forward with a 41-38 AFC West win. Wright had one of the best games of his young and promising career with six tackles and two pass defenses.
“It was big as far as getting the momentum from the win,” Wright said. “It was a fight against a good team. We were able to overcome the obstacles and gain confidence going forward in the season.”
With so much change on the San Diego defense, Wright has been a constant this year. He has started all eight games he has played in and has contributed 34 tackles, a tackle for loss, and three pass defenses. Wright has helped the Chargers into playoff contention in a wide open AFC wildcard race.
Wright also gets the opportunity to play twice against one of the NFL’s all-time great quarterbacks in Peyton Manning. For a young player on the rise, it is a great learning experience to go up against such an established signal caller.
“Watching film and learning tendencies makes you better going against a great quarterback and wide receivers,” Wright said. “When the secondary plays well, the chances of winning improves.”
The former third round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft will look to continue his breakout season down the stretch. Wright and the Chargers have positioned themselves for a playoff push with a strong finish to the year.
