Training camp will begin for the veteran players today in Charger park at 3:45. The rookies on the team have been in Charger park along with a few key veterans to install the plays and go over fundamentals before they hit the real deal with the vets. Training camp will be especially important this season with roster spots more valuable than probably ever before.
QB Philip Rivers was one of the veterans that showed up early to help out the rookies in their learning process. First round draft pick Melvin Ingram spoke about playing against Rivers. "It's a wonderful experience to go out there and go against a player of his (Rivers) caliber." he went on to say "It's a blessing" referring to being able to get better with an elite quarterback.
Melvin Ingram will be playing OLB, I had previously thought he would play some inside and help Takeo Spikes, but he has been practicing both. He is such a versitle player he could really go both ways.
Fifth round draft pick Johnnie Troutman will be placed on non-injured reserve list.
The Chargers are running a little thin on guards and will be looking to add some depth there. Look to see them deal out some of their talent at other positions to make this happen. Namely, tight ends. Chargers have five very solid tight ends going into training camp and won't be able to keep them all. They will be looking to get a little something in exchange for them rather than simply cutting them. It may be future picks or a guard or O-line.
Make sure to take another look at the Chargers training camp schedule to make sure you make every practice and What to Look for in Training Camp as a guide to your training camp experience.
