One week into the free agent signing period, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been surprisingly active. While, as usual, they gave seen some players leave, this year they have actually added at least one potential starter. However, there is still work to do.Guy Whimper to a one-year contract. While that is not a huge move for anything other than adding a veteran back up to the offensive line, it may complicate some other situations.
With limited salary cap room (roughly $2.4 million), the Steelers have major questions at running back and wide receiver depth. With running back Jonathan Dwyer in Arizona and wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery scheduled for a multi-day visit to Carolina, the needs continue to grow. Sure, they can and will likely address both positions in the draft, veteran additions are needed (especially at wide receiver).
While the Steelers are scheduled to meet with running back James Starks (Green Bay) and wide receiver Lance Moore (New Orleans) on Tuesday, one has to wonder what type of move can be made at this point with their limited space. At this point, June 2 cannot come soon enough.
