After a miserable 0-4 start, then embarrassingly dropped to 2-6, the season looked dark. However, incredibly, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still alive for a playoff spot. Yes, they need to win and receive some help, but they are alive. This week, they can take a step forward against a team they are in direct competition with, the Miami Dolphins.

The biggest concern for many this week is how well the battered offensive line and the patchwork back-ups are going to hold up against the Dolphins. This much maligned unit had been on an upswing, keeping quarterback Ben Roethlisberger clean and even opening some creases in the run game. Unfortunately, they again will return to unknown status with a new, inexperienced center and a group that is far less than 100 percent.

There is some good news on Saturday as the final touches are being worked out for this critical battle. The team may receive some help this week from a forgotten acquisition. The team announced early on Saturday that they have activated tight end Matt Spaeth from the injured reserve list and released tight end Richard Gordon from the active roster.

Spaeth, who was placed on IR in preseason after injuring his foot during a session during training camp. The former third round pick (Steelers 2007) out of the University of Minnesota was expected to play a large role as a blocker in the absence of tight end Heath Miller early in the season. The Steelers re-signed him as an unrestricted free agent for his blocking prowess, as he is viewed as one of the best blocking tight ends in the NFL.
