For many, the story of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Sean Spence has been an inspiration. The highly touted inside linebacker has been facing an uphill climb since his knee was destroyed in the 2012 preseason finale. Unfortunately, the total impact in the inspirational story will have to wait until at least 2014 for a successful conclusion.

For Spence, who has recovered faster and better than many had ever expected, his regular season debut will have to wait at least another season as the Steelers placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday.  The team was forced into the decision as the three week  practice period after being activated from the PUP list expired.

To even get to that point, Spence had to overcome tremendous odds, as many thought that the devastating knee injury would end his career. Instead, he took on rehab, and started the long journey back to the team.

This move should not come as a surprise. In fact, looking back at many comments, it appears that the Steelers front office were content with Spence spending the 2013 season in injured reserve. A realization the second-year linebacker definitely was not content with.

Not a typical Steelers’ inside linebacker, Spence adds speed and coverage ability to the inside linebacker position. A four-year starter at the University of Miami, he is smaller than prototypical linebackers at 5-11, 231 pounds, but he is a playmaker with outstanding instincts and solid athleticism. Prior to the injury in the preseason finale, he was on his way to a potential solid season both on special teams and in the base defense, where his athleticism, intelligence and game understanding jumped off the film.
