Yesterday, the primary injury situation became clear for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who will travel to Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots. For the Steelers, the loss of David DeCastro for the week, while expected, could cause more struggles. As covered previously, DeCastro was coming into his own and was developing into a solid contributor. In his place, Guy Whimper (knee) will be the next man up.Ramon Foster has been a full participant in practice and is probable for the Patriots game with his concussion, head injuries are always a wildcard. Yes, Foster expects to start, but if he does not pass any of the remaining concussion tests, he too could be out.
Joining DeCastro on the sideline will be rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton and cornerback Curtis Brown. Wheaton has been out of the line-up since breaking his finger against the Minnesota Vikings. Although he is recovering from the surgery that repaired his pinkie and returned to practice on a limited basis this week, he has not progressed to a point where he can return.
Like the improvement that was happening with DeCastro, Wheaton was climbing the depth chart prior to the injury. In fact, he logged the most snaps in any game of 2013 against the Vikings. The diminutive receiver has dealt with struggles since being drafted by the Steelers in the third round, having to miss the majority of offseason activities due to NCAA regulations.
With both DeCastro and Wheaton out, the offense will be without two players that they were counting on in 2013.bad news for an offense that continues to struggle in all areas, and has been anemic in the Red Zone. If the Steelers want to rebound from their miserable 2-5 start, the offense must improve.
The story is not the same for Brown, who will be inactive for a third consecutive game as a caches decision. The former third round selection out of Texas has been a bust in base defense throughout his career in Pittsburgh and has now lost his edge on special teams’, where he had excelled in previous season. Now that he has become a fixture on the inactive list, one has to wonder when the team will decid to cut the cord with this disappointing cornerback.
