Tuesday’s are always entertaining in Pittsburgh. Why, because Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin must meet with the media during his weekly press conference. Sure, a lot of what he says is full of Tomlinisms, yet, there are times when silence speaks volumes.Mat McBriar. Mesko, who has been at the eye of a storm in past weeks, had a miserable outing against the Oakland Raiders, suffering a partially blocked punt and more short punts, keeping his season average near the bottom of the rankings (42.5 YPK). More importantly, he was the holder for kicker Shaun Suisham’s two missed field goals, with one hold appearing to be suspect.
McBriar is an experienced punter that has had success in the NFL, being named to the Pro Bowl twice in his 10-year career. For his career (eight seasons in Dallas), he is averaging 45.4 yards and 38.0 net yards per punt. He also has the ability to hold on kicks and will likely assume those duties as well.
During his press conference Tomlin did announce that the injuries suffered by offensive linemen, Ramon Foster (concussion), David DeCastro (ankle) and Guy Whimper (knee) were not severe and all three players have a chance to suit up against the New England Patriots on Sunday. In fact, Foster has already been cleared to return to practice.
This is extremely positive news about DeCastro, who has been the Steelers most consistent offensive lineman throughout 2013. While he may be limited early in the week, just the fact that he can potentially return by the end of the week is better than the initial fears that is could be another major injury.
The Steelers also made a couple of depth chart changes on defense, elevating veterans William Gay and Jason Worilds into the starting line-up in place of Cortez Allen and Jarvis Jones. Of course, all four of those players will still likely see significant snaps on a weekly basis and these changes should have minimal impact on rotations.
