There is no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled in Oakland, a trend that unfortunately, continued on Sunday afternoon. In what was a game of missed opportunities, the Steelers fell to 2-5 after a 21-18 loss at the hands on the Oakland Raiders.NFL record for quarterbacks, put the Steelers defense on their heels for the remainder of the first half, and sent the offense on a downward spiral.
While both sides of the ball recovered after being down 21-3 at halftime, they could not overcome the three special team’s miscues, a blocked punt and two missed field goals to pull out a victory. This would be especially frustrating for kicker Shaun Suisham, who was perfect on 15 attempts prior to the two missed chances against the Raiders.
This outcome is nothing new for the Steelers, who continue to struggle in the Black Hole, suffering a similar frustrating loss in 2012, a game the team should have won easily. Statistically, one may same the same thing about Sunday. Sure, the rushing attack never got into gear; mostly because they were playing from behind from the word go in this game. However, even with a struggling rushing attack, the offense moved the ball, but again failed to put points on the board.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was under siege the entire game behind an injury plagued offensive line that finished the game down three members, including both starting guards. In all, he went 29-of-45 for 275 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but those numbers could have been better if wide receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown would have held onto some crucial third down passes.
While the offensive statistics are upsetting, the injury status of the offensive line may be more of a concern. Starting guards Ramon Foster (concussion) and David DeCastro (ankle) were unable to finish the contest due to injury. They were joined by veteran back-up Guy Whimper, who injured a knee in the third quarter. Those injuries forced the Steelers to use the five remaining offensive linemen in a make-shift configuration movie Kelvin Beachum to left guard and never-used Cody Wallace to right guard. At this point, there has been no update on the severity of the injuries, as both DeCastro and Whimper were scheduled to undergo MRIs in Pittsburgh.
