Pittsburgh Steelers Could Learn a Lesson from the Pittsburgh Pirates This Weekend

On Friday, Pittsburghers everywhere watched something special, something that hopefully, members of the Pittsburgh Steelers were paying attention to. What was it? It was a 7-1 Pittsburgh Pirates victory in the Division Series against the Saint Louis Cardinals. While that may not seem like a big deal, it was the situation that the victory came from that the Steelers should embrace.

In many ways, the first game of that series, a 9-1 defeat against the Cardinals could have doomed this team. Their emotional leader rocked, the bats quiet and their defense showing cracks. Ironically, that game was similar to those played by the 0-4 Steelers to this point. Yet, with a rookie pitcher on the hill in Game 2, the Pirates came out, turned the page and played a game 180 degrees out from their Thursday debacle.

That is the lesson that the Steelers must embrace over their bye week- turn the page. In re-watching game tape, it is clear that many of the Steelers have not turned the page from their miserable 2012 season, and if not that season, the emotional outcry when center Maurkice Pouncey went down has created the same effect. The Steelers are not dictating tempo on either side of the ball, instead they are predictable and reacting to teams. In seasons past, they were always aggressive, somewhere in time they lost that aggressive nature.

This has been a strange year from the start, and the professional sports teams in Pittsburgh are continuing that trend. Fittingly, on Sunday, with the Steelers on their bye week, cheers will be heard throughout downtown as the Pirates look to take a 2-1 advantage in their best of five series. Sadly, win or lose that game, for one Sunday, no one will care if the Steelers are not playing.
