How bad is it for the 0-4 Pittsburgh Steelers? It is historically bad, and that is not just about their record. Tuesday, as Buctober begins as the Pittsburgh Pirates start their first playoff run in 21-years; the Steelers have been pushed all the way to third in the pecking order in the city, as there is more buzz about the Pirates and the start of the NHL season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
As ugly as the 34-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings was, the potential injuries to Ben Roethlisberger and starting guard Ramon Foster could have been devastating. Yes, Roethlisberger continued to play after injuring his finger, but those could linger. At this point, it has been diagnosed as a partial dislocation of his right forefinger, and he should be ready to play when the Steelers take on the New York Jets on October 12.
The news for Foster was just as positive, as their most experienced offensive lineman left the game in the first half after suffering a pectoral injury. After receiving further testing, it was deemed that Foster did not suffer serious damage, and he too should be available against New York. His return could be a huge factor, as the offensive line has been a disappointment.
Speaking of the offensive line, is it time for the Steelers to pursue former starter Max Starks, who was released by the Saint Louis Rams on Tuesday. Sure, the veteran could not latch on in either San Diego or Saint Louis in 2013, being released by both franchises, but with his familiarity with the offense and the city, he could help.
This move, while unlikely, could be beneficial for the Steelers, as Mike Adams has struggled mightily at left tackle throughout 2013. Starks may not be as athletic as Adams, or Marcus Gilbert, but he is an experienced left tackle and has stepped into this offense and made an impact in the past. With the Steelers in their bye week, this would be a perfect opportunity to roll the dice. Really, what do they have tolose?
