The Pittsburgh Steelers are on their way to London for their Week 4 match-up against the 0-3 Minnesota Vikings. Before departing, they held their final home practice session, with only tight end Heath Miller limited. Fans should not worry though, Miller said he will be ready to go on Sunday and inhibited in any way from his reconstructed knee.
Why did head coach Mike Tomlin and the organization decide to wait to travel? According to Tomlin, he wanted as much normalcy as possible in an incredibly chaotic week. While this may be a risky proposition, there are some inherent hurdles and some logistic nightmares that come along with a trip like this, giving the team as much familiarity for the typical game week as possible may be just what the Steelers need to notch a victory.
The largest concern will come with the players overall health and physical make-up after spending seven-plus hours in the air, followed by train and bus rides early Friday morning to reach their hotel. The human body does not always react well to long distance travel, so some players are taking extreme measures to stay hydrated and keep swelling down.
Some players are chartering their personal trainers and therapists (Ryan Clark), while others are using IV bags and compression socks on the flight (Antonio Brown). Dehydration and jet lag should be the biggest physical obstacles the Steelers face during their flight and must overcome them to be at peak levels to take on the Vikings who should be well acclimated by Sunday.
By maintaining strict focus early in the week, Tomlin also set the tone. This is not a vacation for the 0-3 Steelers; it is a business trip. If the Steelers want to stop the hemorrhaging that has been their 2013 campaign, they will have to embrace the challenge and overcome their biggest obstacle this season; themselves.
