It is Tuesday, and is the case throughout the regular season Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media. During this session, Tomlin wend over the depth chart, injuries and what the team expects this week against the Tennessee Titans.Heath Miller (knee) and running back Le’Veon Bell (foot) will be out Week 1, but both may be sooner than later. In fact, there is a chance Bell could be ready as early as Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Two players that were banged up against the Carolina Panthers in the preseason finale are battling through their injuries and are practicing. Fullback Will Johnson (hamstring) has been a limited participant, and outside linebacker Jarvis Jones (chest) full participant. Tomlin does not expect Jones to miss time, as he expects him to log quite a few snaps in his Steelers debut.
One player that has missed the past three preseason games, running back Isaac Redman (stinger), has a clean bill of health and is preparing to be the starter with Bell on the sideline. Behind Redman, no particular rotation was made available. With Redman ready to go, running back LaRod Stephens-Howling was tapped to be the primary kick-off return man, and should see more touches as a receiver on third downs. Antonio Brown and rookie Markus Wheaton will handle punt return duties.
The Steelers also made another roster move on Tuesday. However, this one has been expected for some time. The team placed veteran tight end Matt Spaeth (foot) on injured reserve-designated for return. By moving him from the active roster while he recovers from the Lisfranc injury suffered during training camp, it frees up a roster spot until he is potentially ready to return in Week 9.
With Spaeth on injured reserve and Miller (knee) still recovering, the team will use David Johnson, David Paulson, Michael Palmer and potentially offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum in some sets as a tight end. The position is also possibly facing a larger challenge if Johnson, Paulson or Palmer possibly had to assume fullback duties if Johnson is out against the Titans.
With the roster spot opened by Spaeth, the Steelers decided to add another linebacker to the mix by promoting undrafted rookie free agent Terence Garvin from the practice squad. A West Virginia University standout, Garvin was one of the last signings prior to camp and has been a pleasant surprise, quietly rising up the depth chart. With Garvin being promoted, the team signed wide receiver Kashif Moore to fill that hole on the practice squad.
