The Pittsburgh Steelers had a CBA mandated day off from practice Tuesday, but that did not stop the team from making some roster adjustments. However, the biggest news came when it was reported that the team expects to activate tight end Heath Miller from the PUP list prior to the regular season opener. Yes, that decision is positive, but it still does not give a timetable for his return to action on the field.Plaxico Burress, who celebrated his birthday on Monday, likely saw his season and possibly his career come to an end after undergoing rotator cuff surgery on Monday.
In all, the 36-year old receiver, who was a first round selection of the Steelers in 2000, has spent time with three NFL franchises: Pittsburgh, the New York Giants and the New York Jets. During his career, he hauled in 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.
With Burress on injured reserve, the Steelers surprisingly added another young wide receiver to the roster by signing undrafted rookie free agent Tyler Shaw (Northwest Missouri State). The 6-0, 180-pound (4.49 40-yard dash) speedster was a two-sport start in college (football and track) leading his team in receptions his last two seasons and being named an All-Region selection for the track team. Shaw had previously been in camp with the Arizona Cardinals.
This move comes as somewhat of a surprise after the strong performances of the young wide receivers on the roster during the first preseason game against the Giants. Especially perplexing when fans re-watch the tape and see how much the back-up offensive line struggled.
