Much of the internet is seeing an outcry of mixed emotions following the verdict in the Zimmerman Trial, including the ill timed tweets from NFL players such as Victor Cruz, Roddy White and former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison. However, it was another internet incident by a current member of the Steelers that is currently causing a stir in Pittsburgh.

Sunday morning, a picture of center Maurkice Pouncey and his twin brother Mike Pouncey surfaced showing them wearing a “Free Hernandez” ball cap. These hats, which appear to be unaltered, were evidently made to show support for their former Florida Gators teammate Aaron Hernandez, who is currently in jail charged with murder.

Hernandez is accused of committing the execution-style murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-pro football player, in June. Hernandez is also being investigated for another double homicide in Massachusetts, among other crimes. Early this month, Steelers 101 reported that the Pouncey brothers might be contacted about another incident potentially involving Hernandez from their days in college. With this show of support, it is easy to see why this could happen.

At this point, the Steelers have not commented on the photos, but according to sources, they intend on addressing the situation with Pouncey about the photos. With the outbreak of controversial comments or pictures coming from NFL players, more teams should take a proactive approach with their players and their social media exploits.
