Early Thursday morning, Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Chris Rainey was arrested in Gainesville, Florida for simple battery. Allegedly, Rainey got into a fight with his girlfriend of nine months over his cell phone.
In the wake of this incident, the Steelers wasted little time today and released the rookie running back due to the arrest. General manager Kevin Colbert released a statement Thursday stating, "Chris Rainey's actions this morning were extremely disappointing. Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers."
Fans should remember that the drafting of Rainey in April caused a bit of a stir due to his checkered history with the law in Gainesville. In September 2010, he was arrested and charged with aggravated stalking (of a woman) after threatening his girlfriend via a cell phone. While the original charge was a felony, it was reduced to a misdemeanor in a plea deal with the prosecutor’s office and the girlfriend.
