With wide receiver Antonio Brown out with an ankle injury and rookie return specialist Chris Rainey battling a rib injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a move to add depth to their special teams and wide receiver corps. On Monday, the team waived nose tackle Ta'amu and signed wide receiver David Gilreath from the practice squad.
The addition of a return man / wide receiver is not at all surprising as Steelers 101 presented that idea early in the week. However, releasing Ta’amu was a bit surprising. Yes, the mammoth fourth-round pick out of the University of Washington is facing a tough road to hoe after the incident that led to his arrest and subsequent suspension, but, nose tackle depth is something the team lacks long term. There was no immediate word on whether any team put in a waiver claim for the troubled defensive tackle, but with the amount of teams playing a 3-4 scheme, it is possible.
